MEDITECH: Celebrating the Future of Nursing Informatics

Who knows what the future will bring? Some say only time will tell. But MEDITECH and Northeastern University’s Bouvé College (Boston, MA) are doing their part today to improve the future of nursing, with their groundbreaking partnership to bring EHR technologies and real-world hospital experiences to health science students. The university recently held a luncheon to celebrate their collaborative success, where key MEDITECH team members were presented with an appropriate token of thanks–personalized clocks!

MEDITECH: A Head Start for Scanning Success

Thibodaux Regional takes a proactive approach to implementing MEDITECH’s Bedside Verification solution, and winds up with a 95% patient/medication scan success rate.

Thibodaux Regional Medical Center (Thibodaux, LA) was no stranger to quality initiatives when the organization decided to implement MEDITECH’s Bedside Verification (BV) solution. This 185-bed community hospital had been applying quality management methodologies to their processes for more than a decade.

“We never had a problem with medication errors; we simply felt BV would provide our nurses with an extra ‘safety belt’ to help protect patients and improve outcomes. For us, scanning was the next logical step in our journey to enhance care,” says Maria Clause, RN, clinical nurse analyst.

A little less than a year ago, Thibodaux Regional went LIVE with MEDITECH’s BV in their inpatient setting. Since then, they’ve been able to achieve patient and medication scan rates greater than 95%, and have been able to decrease their overall medication error rates and eliminate wrong patient errors entirely.

MEDITECH: Navigating the Health Network

Associate Professor Debra Wolf explains how nurses can harness the power of social media to assist patients and promote their profession.

In today’s Internet-driven world, patients are no longer relying solely on their physician to learn more about their health care conditions. Having so much information at their fingertips, patients are in a position to take better control of their health. However, knowing where to find reliable and safe resources can be a challenge, according to Debra Wolf, PhD, MSN, BSN, RN and associate professor of Nursing at Chatham University.

Leading the Way to Safety

Activist and author Kathleen Bartholomew explains how a culture of patient safety also provides a safe haven for nurses to speak out about the prevalence of medical errors at their facilities.

Having the ability to detect medical errors can help hospitals go a long way toward establishing a culture of safety. But being able to confront mistakes, and have open discussions about preventing future occurrences, is really the key to maintaining an environment that is safe for patients over the long haul, according to nurse activist and author Kathleen Bartholomew, RN, MN.

For health care organizations to succeed in the coming years, Bartholomew believes that nurses will need to take on a leadership role in ensuring that patient safety is always a first priority in our care environments.

MEDITECH: ARRA Nurses Ready?

Professor and industry leader Rosemary Kennedy explains how the EHR plays a central role in helping nurses to prepare for Meaningful Use and the future of health care.

Health care executives are setting goals for their facilities to achieve Meaningful Use compliance, while nurse leaders are  determining how to integrate clinical quality measures into care delivery on the floors.

According to Rosemary Kennedy RN, MBA, FAAN, associate professor at Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing, nurses can improve patient outcomes and move their facilities closer to compliance with ARRA by embracing EHRs and increasing technology use.

“We are finally moving in the direction of a high-performing health care system, and the impact for nurses is huge,” she says.
