Michael Hitchins, a recruiter with an industrial supplies distributor, knows how the Business Career Fair at UMass Dartmouth can make connections that pay off for employers and students: a 2007 UMass Dartmouth graduate, he got his current job at the same event five years ago.
“We come back every year to recruit the next leaders in our company,” Hitchins said in a press release from the university. “We’ve had great success with the university and we’re looking for aggressive, ambitious people who want a career in sales.”
Karissa Bettencourt manned a table at the Fair for MEDITECH. Bettencourt is actively recruiting for paid interns and co-op students who are paid between $1,500 and $3,000 per month — both with benefits.

Are any of you wrestling with how to integrate physician practices on disparate systems (eCW, Allscripts, Cerner, etc.) with Meditech? It seems like many hospitals are acquiring physician practices at a rapid rate. Does anyone have a good solution, especially for a hospital that has numerous practices/clinics on various EMR’s and the docs want to be able to order and result in their own system but the hospital (where the tests are performed) doesn’t want the patient to go through dual registration/Order entry? One hospital CFO says he wants it to be like Avis check in where they just jump in the car and go — he wants the patient to be able to breeze through the check in process at the hospital when he/she arrives to get the testing performed.

Companies in the healthcare industry are willing to pay a premium for scarce IT talent, but they’re choosy about selecting new hires. For people with the right experience, it’s a great time to be job hunting.
“If you’re a solid performer and you’ve been working for a couple of years with products from Epic, Cerner, Meditech or any of the other electronic health record vendors — and especially if you’re willing to travel — the sky is kind of the limit for opportunity,” says Eric Marx, vice president of Health Care IT at staffing firm Modis. “You can pick and choose what you’d like to be doing and get paid very well for it.”

New HIT Practice Offers Specialized Staffing and Recruiting Expertise
To address the recent growth in demand for electronic medical records (EMR), Hudson IT today announced the launch of a new healthcare information technology (HIT) practice. With an emphasis on staffing mid-to-senior level healthcare roles, the practice is designed to help hospitals and related agencies identify the appropriate resources necessary to fulfill meaningful use requirements, as well as implement prevailing software solutions such as Eclipsys(C), MEDITECH(C), McKesson(C), Siemens(C), Cerner(C) and Epic(C).
In West Texas, where unemployment is at 2 percent, the popular chain Chili’s had to close some of its restaurants because there were not enough employees to fill the jobs. Imagine what it’s like for a healthcare system in that part of the country to recruit IT staff, says Gary L. Barnes, CIO of Medical Center Health System in Odessa, Texas.
Barnes served as moderator of a panel on IT staffing shortages Wednesday at the CHIME10 Fall CIO Forum in Phoenix. He was not alone in worrying about staff shortages. The four-member panel – from Maryland, New York, Massachusetts and Tennessee – shared similar concerns. To boot, a new CHIME survey released Wednesday revealed that 51 percent of CIOs across the country are worried they will have to put off planned implementation of electronic health record systems if they don’t find the people to get the job done.

Two years ago, MEDITECH opened a $45 million facility on South Watuppa Pond next to the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center. Since then, MEDITECH has more than doubled staff at the cite site to approximately 450 workers out of 504 possible workstations.
The company is poised to make another expansion into the Fall River area, adding hundreds more new jobs, according to MEDITECH officials.
