Spending New Year’s Eve supporting a Meditech go-live is not exactly how most people define fun, but it is how many at our hospital spent transitioning from 2011 to 2012. I heard someone state, “Wow, this go-live is just like Y2K; a non-event.”
What most CIOs will tell you is that the main reason Y2K was such a “non-event” is that the amount of work behind the scenes was like a Cecil B. DeMille production — comprising a cast of thousands that put in long hard hours making it a non-event. The same is true for our 6.6 go-live. The cast was not made up of thousands, but definitely hundreds put in countless hours and made it a major success. In the opinion of our Meditech representative, it was a 9 out of 10, and their best to date.

Two health authorities share the benefits of MEDITECH’s 6.1 business platform.
An aging patient population. A shrinking healthcare workforce. The untapped potential of technology. These are the shared concerns that brought the Northern and Interior health authorities together last year, to explore options for consolidating their I.T. systems and resources, as mandated by the government.
Today, they share a single MEDITECH’s 6.1 business platform–enabling each to benefit from increased system functionality, at a substantially lower cost.
The Northern and Interior health authorities are now using one supply chain management database with multiple purchasing facilities, allowing them to leverage costs across the vast province. This business system consolidation has also created the largest payroll system running on the MEDITECH solution, with more than 28,000 active employees between the two authorities.

Canton-Potsdam Hospital will begin installation Jan. 1 of the first phase of electronic medical record (EMR) software called MEDITECH 6.0, designed to improve safety and quality of patient treatment at the hospital.
MEDITECH is one of the leading providers of EMR software. The installation follows months of preparation by cross-functional teams drawn from all areas of the hospital’s clinical and support operations.
“This significant investment of capital and human resources is much more than a simple upgrade to our software: it’s about changing the way we deliver care,” said Deanna L. Page, Vice President of Clinical Services at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, who has been leading the process redesign teams.

“4 days to go live” — those words can instill fear into even the most seasoned CIO if the comfort level that everything is ready to go is not there. Luckily for me, I have a great team and, while there are still minor concerns, we are where we need to be for a successful go live. More importantly, we have sat down and reviewed all the critical failure points and attempted to establish fallback and contingency plans should the worst happen.
In the last 4 weeks, we have been at a mad scramble. Meditech recommended moving out the go-live to post next AUG (the next available opening). Needless to say, we reviewed the open tasks and determined we were not far off where we needed to be. Our team then put in a heroic effort to bring things up to par, leaving everyone with the proper comfort level. Additionally, we brought back some external consultants to work remaining tasks that just needed more bodies thrown at them, such as recreating NPI reports.

HIStalk has a few interesting bits this morning – check them out:
From THB: “Re: Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. Going Epic.”The 218-bed hospital gets board approval to replace McKesson Horizon with Epic in a $19 million deal, saying it will cost about $5 million over five years to implement Epic. It says Meaningful Use money will offset that amount, and after that, Epic will actually be cheaper that McKesson. Epic doesn’t usually sell to hospitals that small, so either CRMC is affiliated with a larger Epic customer or Epic is started to push down into Meditech territory.
So – will Epic be cheaper than McKesson? And is CRMC pushing into MEDITECH territory? Let us know in the comments!
From WSDiner: “Re: HCA. At a Credit Suisse Healthcare conference investor dinner Thursday night, HCA’s management said they piloted Meditech 6.0 this year and will pilot Epic next year. They said that no other vendors (i.e., Cerner) were under consideration.” The reader provided a Credit Suisse contact to confirm, but he didn’t respond to my e-mail. This will be interesting if it’s true – my read has always been that HCA just wants to scare Meditech into better pricing by bringing in competitors, but Epic doesn’t walk away without a contract in most cases. HCA is Meditech’s largest customer, contributing 8% of the company’s revenue in 2010.
HCA is a large part of MEDITECH’s customer base – could they be moving to Epic? Please let us know your thoughts. We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
